London Borough of Enfield

Pedestrian Crossings

Every year in Enfield, there are about 800 road accidents that result in injury to road users, and there can be between six and 25 fatalities.

We receive funding from the Mayor of London to finance our road safety schemes programme; over the last few years, this has been about £500,000 per year. This sum pays for about 10 schemes of varying value.

Unfortunately demand for safety schemes, including pedestrian crossings, far outstrips resources and we must prioritise our spending. This is done primarily by considering the history of injury accidents for roads and junctions around the borough.

Each year, a safety schemes programme is produced as part of the council's bid to the Mayor for London for funding in the following financial year. As part of this process, we look into requests for pedestrian crossings to see whether the safety measures can be justified when compared to other roads that have problems of accidents.

If a pedestrian crossing is being asked for at a location that is already on the safety schemes programme, we will inform the person who made the request.

Any requests for pedestrian crossings that cannot be met through the above process are retained on a database. They are considered when other sources of funding for road safety measures become available to us.

You can request for a pedestrian crossing by post, phone, and email or in person.
