Road Gritting FAQ's
(Highway Services 2011/2012)
When does the gritting season begin?
1st November 2011- 31st March 2012
What exactly does Highway Services grit?
All of the major routes through the borough, bus routes, roads with gradients and roads that are identified as particularly cold from our thermal map. This network is available for residents to view on the Council's website along with a list of the roads. The priority network is approximately 46% of the overall road length of the Borough, which is a far higher percentage than the majority of other London Boroughs.
What roads/areas don't we grit?
·The A10 Great Cambridge Road and A406 North Circular Road . They are treated by Transport for London who can be contacted on 0845 305 1234 or Londonstreets@tfl.gov.uk
· Private roads
· Car parks
· Footways are NOT treated by Highway Services. Enfield 's Cleansing Team will treat a limited footway network in advance of heavy snow.
What happens in severe snowfall conditions?
When snow or ice may remain for some days, consideration is given to treating pavements which will be treated in priority order (see plan). These may include:
· Pavements in the town centre
· Train and bus stations
· Main pedestrian routes
· Hospitals
Who can I contact during gritting season?

There are parked vehicles down my road which prevent my
road being gritted. Can my road be gritted at a later date?
If the road is on the list to be gritted every effort will be made to treat that road. If the gritter cannot access the road, information, will be left on obstructing vehicle (s) advising them to reconsider where they park.
Who grits car parks? (not all car parks are gritted)
Parking Services: contact details 020 8379 1000
Do we have grit bins?
Enfield Council do not have any grit bins. Instead, residents will be able to access one of the 22 'self-help' salt sacks which will be deployed at strategic locations across the footway network ahead of a forecast of heavy snow. Please click on the link below Salt Sack Locations
What happens when the salt sacks are empty?
They may be replenished dependant on remaining salt stocks.
A number of factors need to be considered including the availability of resources and predicted future weather patterns.
The possibility that Boroughs may not receive further salt deliveries this winter will also need to be taken into account.
PLEASE NOTE: Although Enfield has doubled its salt stock holding since last year, it must retain the ;ability to keep the primary network open for the rest of winter without the prospect of a re stock.
I have had an accident in the icy weather and wants to make a claim, what do I do?
Please contact Enfield Customer on 020 8379 1000
I am elderly / Disabled/ pregnant and I cannot get out of my home due to the pavement / road not being on the gritting list. What can can I do?
