Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment

Local Flood Risk in Enfield

Flood Risk

The Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment (PFRA) provides a high level overview of flood risk from all sources within Enfield .  It focuses on local sources of flooding such as surface water and groundwater rather than main rivers.  It has been prepared for Enfield as part of the Drain London project and is a requirement of the Flood Risk Regulations 2009 which implement the requirements of the European Floods Directive 2007/60/EC. This directive aims to provide a consistent approach to managing flood risk across Europe.

Fortunately widespread flooding from heavy rainfall does not occur frequently, however there are areas of Enfield that are more likely to flood because of a combination of their geography and their drainage capacity.  The PFRA identifies these areas.  The forthcoming Surface Water Management Plan and Local Flood Risk Management Strategy are being developed to determine the best approach to address flood risk across the borough.

It is important to remember that the computer modelling on which the flood risk maps are based is not an exact science.  The maps can only give a general indication high risk areas and should not be taken as a precise representation of the extent of flooding for a given storm.  The purpose is to identify areas most at risk so that organisations and people can be more prepared.

Everyone can reduce the risk to themselves and their property. The Environment Agency’s website sets out clear guidance on what the public can do before, during and after a flood.
