Road safety - Bikeability
Bikeability in Enfield
Bikeability is the new cycling proficiency scheme launched in England in March 2007. Trainees will be instructed on how to ride their bikes to the Government approved National Standards for Cycle Training, which sets out the training and skills essential for making cycling trips in today's road conditions. There are three Bikeability levels:
Level 1 is usually covered in a traffic free environment, and by completing Level 1, the cyclist will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make an off-road trip. The Level 1 skills are a pre-requisite to cycling on road and for Level 2.
Level 2 is covered on quiet roads but with real traffic conditions. By completing Level 2, the cyclist will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip to school, work or leisure on quiet roads.
Level 3 is covered on busy roads incorporating real traffic conditions and advanced road features and complex junctions.
Bikeability in Schools: Level 1 and Level 2 are offered to primary schools for either Year 5 or Year 6 pupils and the training is carried out in groups during school hours subject to availability. Level 1 is carried out in the school playground in groups of up to 12 pupils. Level 2 is carried out on quiet roads near to the school in small groups. All training is currently free for Enfield schools.
One to One Bikeability Training: Level 2 and/or Level 3 are offered to adults and to young people over the age of ten and a half. The training is carried out from the home on a 1:1 basis and consists of either 2 x 1.5 hour lessons or 1 x 2 hour lesson depending on previous experience. The training is currently free to Enfield residents. Applicants will need to have use of a roadworthy bike with gears and of a suitable size for the trainee.
All cycle training is carried out by accredited cycling instructors. For further information and application forms, please contact Road Safety and Travel Awareness on 020 8379 3574 or email roadsafety@enfield.gov.uk
