London Borough of Enfield

Dangerous road junctions

There are about 1,100 road accidents every year in Enfield that result in injuries, and about eight to 25 fatal accidents. The council receives funding from the Mayor for London for its road safety scheme programme; the amount of funding is about £500,000 per year (for the last few years). This amount is for about 10 schemes. Unfortunately, the demand for safety schemes far exceeds the funds; thus we have to prioritise how the money is spent. We do this mainly by considering the history of the roads and junctions in Enfield.

Each year, a safety schemes programme is produced as part of the council's bid to the Mayor for London for funding in the following financial year. Requests for improvements at dangerous junctions are investigated as part of the bidding process; this is to see if safety measures can be justified for a particular road. If improvements are asked for at a road junction that is already on the safety schemes programme, we will inform the customer.

Requests for safety improvements that cannot be met are kept on a database. When funding is available for road safety measures, they will be considered.

Customers can request improvements at dangerous road junctions by post, phone and email or in person.
