Traffic signs and road markings
Traffic signs and road markings
Traffic signs and road markings are provided to warn, guide and give clear information to all road users. They are important in promoting the safe use of the public highway.
Each traffic authority is responsible for the provision and care of traffic signs and road markings on its roads.
The use of traffic signs and road markings on the public highway is controlled by an Act of Parliament. Authorities may only use traffic signs and road markings that are included in the legal document 'Traffic Signs, Regulations and General Directions 2002' but some signs are specially authorised by the Secretary of State.
It is illegal to provide any traffic sign or road marking that is not authorised, or has been provided without the traffic authority's approval. Any traffic sign or road marking may be removed without notice.
Traffic and Transportation Service deals with:
- Providing new traffic signs and road markings
- Amending existing traffic signs and road markings
- Removing traffic signs and road markings on the public highway in Enfield (except for the M25, which is the responsibility of Highways Agency, and the A10 and A406, which are the responsibility of Transport for London.
This can include:
- Requests for signs
- Local safety-and-accident reduction schemes
- Parking schemes
- Major highway improvement and safety schemes
You can request traffic signs and road markings by post, phone, email or in person.
