Cycle lanes and routes

Cycle lanes and routes

Cycling is a low-cost form of transport that offers a healthy way to travel around Enfield and beyond. You can avoid traffic jams and avoid generating pollution too.

To help you get around easily with your bicycle, we have the following facilities:

Cycle routes

  • These routes are not indicated by white line markings; only indicated by signs.
  • They usually follow the routes of existing roads, paths and tracks but are not separate from pedestrians or motorists.

Advisory cycle lanes

  • These are on the roads.
  • Such a lane is marked with a broken white line, which means motorists are permitted to enter and park their vehicles in the lane.
  • Sometimes it is highlighted by the use of coloured surfacing.
  • Width: 1-2 metres (although a minimum width of 1.5m has been suggested.)

Mandatory cycle lanes

  • Similar to advisory cycle lanes, except they are marked with a continuous white line and are supported by a legal document called a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).
  • TRO stops vehicles from driving or parking in the lane.

Contra-flow cycle lanes

  • These are fixed cycle lanes that allow cyclists to travel against the normal flow of traffic in one-way streets.

Advanced stop lines for cyclists

  • Usually located at junctions controlled by traffic lights.
  • This line is an additional stop line that allows cyclists to stop at a junction in front of motor vehicles.
  • They give cyclists additional protection at junctions where they are likely to come into conflict with other vehicles.

Cycle tracks

  • Located on the public highway but off the main carriageway.

They may be:

  • A dedicated cycle facility
  • Placed next to an existing pedestrian facility
  • A facility for pedestrians and cyclists

You can request for a list of cycle lane and cycle routes by post, phone, email or in person. Please contact Traffic and Transportation.
