Ancient Monuments
Many important sites and structures of archaeological interest are identified and protected through the statutory schedule of ancient monuments. These are monuments of national importance.
In general, once a monument has been scheduled, consent is required before any works are carried out which would have the effect of damaging or altering the monument. The scope of the control is extensive and carrying out unauthorised work can constitute an offence leading to prosecution.
There are five scheduled ancient monuments in the London Borough of Enfield.
- Site of Elsynge Hall, Forty Hall
- Earthworks at Old Park
- Moated site, Camlet Moat, Moat Wood
- Flash Lane Aquaduct
- Old Park Moated Lake
In addition, the London Borough has monuments of local interest such as the former Animal Pound, Bourne Hill, Southgate. Monuments of local interest do not have the same legislative protection as scheduled ancient monuments.
