Street naming and numbering

The London Borough of Enfield is responsible for the naming and numbering of new and existing streets and properties within the borough. The authority will assign street names and building numbers and provide the Royal Mail, emergency services, Land Registry, and relevant Council services with a copy of the naming/numbering schedule. The Street Naming and Numbering (SNN) Officers are responsible for this statutory requirement under the provision of The London Building Acts (Amendment) Act 1939, the London Borough of Enfield SNN Policy and in accordance with the LLPG and SN&N Data Entry Conventions.

The primary purpose is to create addresses, which are logical and consistent and to ensure that properties can be located quickly in all situations. This is important as various organisations, delivery, postal, emergency services and the general public need an efficient way of locating and referencing properties. When naming streets/buildings the process involves consultation with the Royal Mail, fire and ambulance services, so that duplications of names are avoided. The Council follows the above Act and Policy on naming and numbering. The SNN Policy has been agreed with the emergency services and the Royal Mail.

Initially a proposal for naming and numbering will be sent to you with 28 days for objections to be received. When your application has been processed, we will issue a Notice of SNN and an Order will be made. These give the new naming or numbering official status.

Please note, The London Borough of Enfield is not responsible for issuing Postcodes, as this is solely a matter dealt with by the Royal Mail. Log onto the Royal Mail website or telephone 08456045060. The Royal Mail will not create a postcode for a new building without confirming that the address has been officially assigned by the SNN Officer.

Numbering/Renumbering a property - £100.00
Naming a Building/Block - £142.00
Naming a Street - £263.00
