Broomfield House Restoration

broomfield house

Broomfield House was once a fine mansion and the centre piece of a formal Baroque landscape, now a public park.  Sadly it succumbed to a series of disastrous fires in 1984, 93 and 94 and has been surrounded by scaffolding and hoardings for much of the last 20 years.  Fortunately much of its fine interior (including the Lanscroon murals) was saved and is in safe storage ready for restoration.  However, successive attempts by the Council to find the funding and development partners to achieve this have not been successful. Until now.

In 2009 a new survey by heritage specialists showed that much of the fabric could still be saved and a further report showed how this might be done in partnership with a registered social landlord RSL.  Click on this link to see the reports..............

It was while preparing these reports that, working with English Heritage, a successful bid was made to the London Development Agency, supported by the Mayor of London, for £5.9m of core funding for the restoration and conversion to homes for older people.   Conservation architects prepared a Feasibility Study that confirmed that with a RSL partner an attractive, viable scheme could be done that restored the House, put back the much-missed hall, cafe and meeting room while providing up to 20 homes for older residents within the House, converted stable block and the kitchen garden.  Click on this link to see this report...............

An initial £500, 000 was received in April 2010 to start design work and consultants will be appointed shortly to take this forward.  The Council will be reaching out in the coming months to the many local residents groups and stakeholders with an interest in Broomfield House and Park to talk through the proposals, fine tune them and take on board local views.  We are all working really hard to finally resolve this long-standing problem and restore these fine listed buildings in a way that we can all be proud of.  Fingers crossed that the balance of the money from the GLA and the Mayor comes through....
