Tree Preservation Orders
Tree Preservation Orders
We maintain the public register of Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and protected trees, and process applications for tree works. In Enfield, there are over 300 TPOs protecting thousands of trees.
If you wish to carry out works to protected trees, including those in a Conservation Area, you need the approval of Enfield Council. Under the legislation, the maximum penalty for cutting down, uprooting, topping, lopping or wilfully damaging a tree under TPO is a fine of up to £20,000.
A landowner has a duty to replace a tree that was removed in contravention of a TPO. If not, the council is authorised to issue a tree replacement notice.
Unauthorised works to trees protected by a TPO are a breach of planning control.
If you suspect that someone is committing a breach of planning control, you can report it by telephone, in writing or online.
