When do elections take place?
Elections generally take place on Thursdays. The dates of elections vary according to the type of election. As a guide:- In normal circumstances, UK parliamentary elections take place every five years. The last general election was held on Thursday 6 May 2010 with the next due to be held on Thursday 7 May 2015.
- Elections to the European Parliament take place every five years, usually in June. The next elections are due to take place in 2014.
- Elections to the London Borough of Enfield take place every four years, usually on the first Thursday in May. The next elections are due to take place in 2014.
- Elections of the London Mayor and Assembly Members take place every four years, usually on the first Thursday in May. The next elections are due to take place on Thursday 3 May 2012.
- Referendums take place very rarely. A referendum on which of two voting systems should be used to elect MPs to the House of Commons will be held on Thursday 5 May 2011.
In addition, by-elections can take place at any time to fill a vacancy caused by an elected representative resigning, dying or becoming disqualified from office.
