London Borough of Enfield

Types and frequency of elections

Types of election

Enfield's Returning Officer administers all national and local government elections held in the borough.  The different types of election are:

UK parliamentary - there are three Members of Parliament (MPs) elected to represent Enfield, in the Edmonton, Enfield North and Enfield Southgate parliamentary constituencies.

European Parliamentary - eight Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are elected to represent the London electoral region.

London Borough of Enfield - sixty-three councillors are elected across the twenty-one electoral wards of the borough.

Mayor of London - a Mayor is elected to represent the whole of London.

Greater London Assembly - twenty-five Assembly Members are elected.  Fourteen represent a constituency area - in Enfield's case, that constituency is called Enfield and Haringey - and eleven are elected on a London-wide basis.

Referendum - this is a rare event where the electorate is asked to answer "yes" or "no" to a specific question.  On Thursday 5 May 2011, electors across the UK will be asked the following question:

"At present, the UK uses the 'first past the post' system to elect MPs to the House of Commons.  Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?"
