Types and frequency of elections

When do elections take place?

Elections generally (but not always) take place on Thursdays.  The dates of elections vary according to the type of election.  As a guide:
  • In normal circumstances, UK Parliamentary elections take place every five years.  The last general election was held on Thursday 6 May 2010 with the next due to be held on Thursday 7 May 2015.
  • Elections to the European Parliament take place every five years, usually in June.  The next elections will take place on Thursday 22 May 2014.
  • Elections to the London Borough of Enfield take place every four years, usually on the first Thursday in May.  The next elections will take place on Thursday 22 May 2014.
  • Elections of the London Mayor and Assembly Members take place every four years, usually on the first Thursday in May.  The next elections are due to take place in 2016.
  • Referendums take place very rarely.  The last referendum was held on Thursday 5 May 2011.

In addition, by-elections can take place at any time to fill a vacancy caused by an elected representative resigning, dying or becoming disqualified from office.
