Children and young people - child protection

Child Protection

The child protection process takes measures to safeguard vulnerable children and young people who are at risk or suffering from physical, emotional or sexual abuse, and/ or neglect.

Under the 1989 Children Act, we have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children who are in need and, as far as it is consistent with that duty, promote the upbringing of such children by their families.

We are also obliged to ensure that children in Enfield are protected from significant harm; any child at risk of significant harm is invariably a 'child in need'.

Our Children in Need Service has the lead responsibility for child protection; they are supported by many other agencies (e.g. police and schools). The service comprises:

  • An Assessment Team - it undertakes Child Protection Investigations (often alongside the Police); and
  • A Children and Family support team - it monitors and oversees the protection plans of those children under Child Protection Plans.

If you are concerned that a child is either being abused or is at risk of abuse, get help immediately. Contact a social worker at Charles Babbage House. All referrals are considered and we will take appropriate action based on the information from you and other sources.

Referrals from other professionals should always be followed up in writing.
