All petitions must include:

  • A clear and concise statement covering the subject of the petition. It should state what action the petitioners wish the council to take.

  • The name, address and signature of any person supporting the petition.

Petitions can be organised or signed by anyone who lives, works, studies or does business in the Borough.

Petitions will not be accepted if they are considered to be vexatious, abusive or otherwise inappropriate. In addition, Planning and Licensing issues and any other matters which already have a right of recourse to a review or right of appeal are excluded from the Council's Petitions Scheme.

The Council will acknowledge receipt of a petition within ten working days.

The Council's response to a petition will depend on what a petition asks for and how many people have signed it. View the full details of the Council's Petitions Scheme.

Petitions with 2750 signatures can be presented to Council for consideration and a petition can seek to call an officer for the Council to account by the Overview and Scrutiny Committee (1375 signatures.)
