The Mayor's Poetry Competition 2010 - Rules
Closing date: 31st January 2011. Prizes: 1st £500, 2nd £200,
3rd £100. Special ' Enfield Prize' for a poem on the subject of Enfield : £50
The adjudicator for the inaugural year of the competition will be award-winning poet and Enfield resident Mario Petrucci.
- The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over.
- Poems must be original, unpublished, not currently submitted elsewhere nor have won any other prize.
- Poems should be typed or neatly handwritten and must not exceed 50 lines. Poems must be in English.
- The Enfield Prize - in addition, we want to encourage new writers and diverse audiences for poetry and so we would like to receive poems in any language for the special Enfield Prize for a poem on the subject of Enfield ; again poems must not exceed more than 50 lines and the writer must please supply the English translation, thank you.
- Entries should not identify the author in any way.
- No entry form is required but on a separate sheet of paper give your name, address, email address, and telephone number, with the titles of the poems submitted; and tell us where you heard about the competition.
- Receipt of your entry to this competition will be acknowledged only if you supply a stamped self addressed envelope marked "Receipt" is enclosed with the entry.
- Do not send the original writing - only send a copy of your poem(s); as we cannot return poems after the competition nor can we be held responsible for any loss of your poems.
- A list of winners will be displayed on the web site at: www.enfield.gov.uk and at www.chela.co.uk/poetry.php
- The entry fee ( Sterling only) is 3 per poem for the first three poems and 10 for 4 poems, and 2 per poem thereafter. Make cheques payable to Mayor's Charity Appeal and write your name and address on the back.
- All entries are also automatically eligible for the Enfield Prize. If you believe your poem touches on Enfield life in any way, please write ' Enfield ' in the top right hand corner. The winners of the Enfield Prize can also win a main prize in the competition.
- Closing date is 31st January 2011, and prize winners will be notified within 10 days of the closing date.
- Copyright remains with the author but the organisers reserve the right to publish the winning poems and a selection from the short list in print form or on the web for the purposes of promoting 'Creative Enfield' and the creative work of local people.
- We regret that we are unable to amend poems or return them after entry.
- The winner and runners-up will be invited to read their entries at a special prize-giving event, date to be confirmed.
- Entrants will be deemed to have accepted these conditions of entry on submission of their poems.
- The judges will announce their decision in the press and to the winning entries, we cannot call everyone to report the judge's decision.
- The adjudicator will advise the Worshipful the Mayor of Enfield, Cllr Jayne Buckland.
- The decision of the adjudicator shall be final and binding upon the participants entering this competition.
