What is Climate Change?

Why don’t we want a warmer climate?

If the climate continues to get warmer there are likely to be a number of negative effects:

  • More flooding as there will be more extreme storms
  • Less and more infrequent rainfall will lead to droughts and water shortages
  • Rising sea levels as ocean temperatures increase and ice melts
  • Animals and eco-systems will be affected and some will be unable to survive the changes.  It is believed that 20-30% of plant and animal species will be at risk of extinction if the earth's temperature increases by more than 2.5°C
  • Risk to health.  A warmer climate will result in more heat-related illnesses, skin cancer and diseases such as Malaria
  • We won't be able to produce as much food and the types of food we will be able to produce will change due to the water shortages and hotter temperatures
