At Work
What can employers do?
A lot of energy is used in offices; in fact 10% of all the energy used in buildings is from offices.
Employers can take steps to help the environment and save money at the same time.
-
Buy energy efficient products and opt for products with minimal packaging. Choose products which have energy saving modes
- Turn the heating down by at least 1°C, the recommended temperature is 18°C
- Set the heating to a timer so that it is only on when people are in the building
- Put stickers on the electrical equipment to remind staff to turn them off after use
- Use timers on equipment where possible, E.G. on a vending machine. This will save energy when the machine is not in use overnight and at weekends
- Save water by fitting push button taps. They will use half as much water as conventional taps
- Encourage staff to use online technology to communicate such as emails and video conferencing
- Fit the office with recycling bins
- Supply lockers, showers and bike racks so staff can walk or cycle to work
- Switch all equipment off at night
- Don't have heating and cooling systems working at the same time
If you are interested in setting up a Cycle to Work Scheme you may be entitled to a grant or some guidance.
The Carbon Trust offer loans for energy efficient office equipment, for more information please visit their website.
