Sustainability, energy and climate change

What is Climate Change?

The term climate change is used to describe the changes in the earth's temperatures over the last 100 years. There are now more greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere which is leading to an increase in temperature, this can have some severe effects on the earth if we don't act now.

Green Globe

The rise in the earth's temperature is known as the 'greenhouse effect' as it is caused by greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases surround the earth and they let the sun's rays enter but stop heat escaping. This is a natural process and has happened for many years and it's necessary to sustain life on earth.  However, humans are producing more gas, by burning fossil fuels (E.g. coal and oil); using it to power and heat our homes and workplaces; and by using it to fuel cars and planes, so more and more heat is being trapped. This is causing a warmer climate which can have a number of negative effects.
