Enfield Greenways - Hadley Wood to Enfield Island Village

Hadley Wood to Enfield Island Village Greenway

forty hall

As part of Enfield Council's Greenway network, we propose to introduce a 15.5km route across the north of the Borough. This will extend between Hadley Wood in the west and Enfield Island Village in the east.

This Greenway will follow the routes of a number of existing paths and quiet roads. Many of the off-road sections however, can be inaccessible for large parts of the year. There are also significant barriers and obstructions, such as major roads and railway lines, which can only be negotiated by the most able bodies of users.

The introduction of this Greenway will bring significant benefits. It will provide an easily accessible and continuous route, passing through and near to some of Enfield 's most attractive and historic parks and open spaces. Areas such as Trent Park and the historic Forty Hall will be connected to residential areas, creating a convenient, safe and green form of non motorised travel.

Children travelling to and from local schools will benefit from direct connections and improved paths and crossing points. There will be improved connections to workplaces and to National Rail and Underground stations. It will link to the London Loop and the Lea Valley Walk, as well as the London Cycle Network + and National Cycle Routes 1 and 12.

Local people will benefit from enhanced leisure and recreational facilities. The introduction of this route across the north of the Borough will open up a greater variety of routes and destination to walkers, joggers and cyclists.

Beyond Enfield Island Village , the route will be linked to the Lee Valley Regional Park via the Lea Valley Walk and National Cycle Route 1.

Proposals

This route will be implemented in phases during the next two to three years. The first phase will see improvements to a 3.5km length of the proposed Greenway, between the A10, near Enfield Crematorium, and Enfield Island Village.

Click here for detailed plans of proposed Greenway.

Improvements that will be carried out as part of the first phase will include:-

  • Improved access for pedestrians and cyclists across the A10.
  • Widening and reconstruction of the path along the northern side of Enfield Crematorium.
  • Improved pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities on Hertford Road at the entrance to Albany Park.
  • Improved access for pedestrians and cyclists across the railway bridge on the eastern side of Albany Park .
  • Wider paths and improved surfacing through Albany Park.
  • Improved pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities, with road safety and traffic calming measures on Newbury Avenue at Turkey Brook.
  • Widening of the path on the northern side of Prince of Wales Field.
  • Improved pedestrian and cycle access in Enfield Island Village.
  • Removal and/or relocation of barriers and obstructive street furniture throughout.

Clear and consistent signing will be provided throughout the Greenway network. Directional signs will be mounted at major junctions with reminders posted along routes. Information points will also be installed at key locations such as National Rail and London Underground stations.

Construction of this first phase of improvements is underway. This will continue over the coming months.

What happens next?

Our proposals for the section of this Greenway, west of the A10, are currently being developed. Further information relating to this work will be published when available.

We are committed to ensuring that Greenways meet the needs of a wide variety of users. We are also keen to ensure that Greenways are sensitive to and in keeping with the needs of all local environments. This is particularly important in the environmentally sensitive and historic parks and landscapes.

The views of local people can shape the way this route is developed and any feedback or suggestions you may have will be gratefully received. A comments form is available to download by clicking the link below. Please feel free to complete this form and return to the address provided.
