Together with Transport for London and in partnership with Sustrans, Enfield Council is in the process of developing and introducing a Borough wide network of routes know as Greenways.

The Greenway programme is a London wide initiative, the aims of which are to increase the levels of walking and cycling throughout London. So far, over 1,800km of existing and proposed Greenway routes have been identified.

Greenways are also expanding throughout England, with an estimated 17,000km of Greenways having been created or planned.

What is a Greenway?

A Greenway is route that can be enjoyed and shared by pedestrians, joggers, cyclists and wheelchair users of all ages and abilities. They can be used for health, recreation, leisure and local journeys. They are free to use and open to all, providing a great way for people to stay fit and healthy while enjoying a breath of fresh air.

Greenways offer people a largely traffic free environment that is safe, convenient, easy to access, pleasant and appealing. They help to connect people to facilities and improve access to and through woodlands, watercourses, green parks and open spaces.

Each route is constructed and maintained to high quality with an emphasis on being free from barriers and obstruction. They will avoid heavily trafficked roads, instead following off-road routes, quiet residential roads and/or traffic free sections of busier roads.

The Greenway network will link to other non-motorised networks such as the London Loop, the Lea Valley Walk, the New River Path, the London Cycle Network + and the National Cycle Network.

Why Greenways

The development of the Greenway network can help to 'promote health and well being' and create 'accessible open spaces'. Our parks and open spaces are for the pleasure and enjoyment of all. Greenways can play a significant role in contributing to meet our goal of 'making open spaces in Enfield places for everyone' and in 'creating sustainable open spaces for the future'.

Greenways can bring a wide variety of benefits for local people. They provide access to a safe environment where both adults and children, including those who are inexperienced, vulnerable or suffer from disabilities, can enjoy and take part in leisure and recreational activities.

Each route will focus on avoiding heavily trafficked roads and junctions. However, where this is unavoidable, traffic calming and road safety measures will be introduced. There will be access to safer ways of crossing major roads, railways and watercourses. This will contribute to improving pedestrian and cycle safety, which in turn will help to reduce the number and severity of accidents on the roads.

The reliance on the car can be reduced by creating improved links and connections to facilities such as schools, sports and leisure centres, tourist attractions and to both National Rail and London Underground stations. Greenways will improve travel options and will help to reduce both traffic congestion and pollution.

Steep gradients will be avoided. Unnecessary obstruction such as gates, barriers and obstructive street furniture, all of which can be a hindrance and cause nuisance, will be replaced, relocated and/or removed. Wider paths and improved surfacing and lighting will create routes that are suitable to be shared and enjoyed by users of all abilities, on foot and on bike, all year round.

All improvements will be sympathetic and in keeping with local surroundings. To achieve this, we will be undertaking detailed consultation with local stakeholders, particularly in environmentally and historically sensitive areas.

Greenways in Enfield

Enfield is one of London 's largest boroughs. It is also one of the greenest boroughs with a wealth of country and urban parks, open spaces, woodland and waterways. The Borough also has close links to neighbouring regional parkland such as the Lee Valley and Epping Forest.

As part of the Council's Parks and Open Spaces Strategy, we seek to improve accessibility to open spaces for all residents, together with improved connections to and between those areas. The Greenways programme compliments the commitments of this strategy.

The Greenways programme will see the introduction of a borough wide network of Greenways. This has and will continue to be developed in consultation with local residents and stakeholders.
