Filthy and/or verminous
Filthy and/or verminous properties
These are premises that fall under the definition of "Filthy" and / or "Verminous" under the Public Health Act 1936 Section 83.
Typical premises are occupied by persons who do not believe there is an issue. They maybe hoarders or have let their property fall into major disrepair or have a large amount of cats or dogs that they do not look after appropriately. These properties can cause problems to neighbours by spreading pest infestations, producing strong odours, and or providing an unhygienic environment in which to live in.
The Council has powers to deal with these premises. Often matters can be resolved by informal action but formal intervention by service of a Notice can be taken. Where the requirements of the Notice are not met, the Council can take action to clean up the property itself.
These premises are dealt with by the Environmental Protection Team.
