Enfield Road Safety Partnership
The Enfield Road Safety Partnership was established in 2004 in response to the Council's Local Public Sector Agreement, aimed at reducing the numbers of killed and seriously injured on Enfield 's roads.
Its aims are: To make the roads in Enfield safer for all road users
To reduce the number of people injured on the roads in Enfield
To improve awareness with regard to Road Safety in Enfield
The partnership includes representatives from London Borough of Enfield, the Metropolitan Police Service, Borough and Roads Policing Operational Command Units, London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, Transport for London, the London Safety Camera Partnership and Healthy Schools .
They meet regularly to develop and deliver promotional events and innovative projects tackling key objectives:
- To seek a reduction in speed on roads in Enfield
- To target young people, particularly those who are becoming eligible to drive
- To protect vulnerable road users - children, pedestrians, cyclists and powered two wheelers
Since it's inception the Partnership has delivered numerous high profile projects including in car safety advice, initiatives around Enfield schools, motorcycle and pedestrian safety displays, road safety exhibitions, presentations in schools and "simulated crash scenarios" aimed at young and pre drivers.
Safe Drive Stay Alive
Most recently the Partnership has been concentrating its efforts on a major project called Safe Drive Stay Alive (SDSA). SDSA is a road safety Theatre in Education production aimed at reducing road casualties among 16-18 year olds. SDSA emphasises 5 key messages:
- Speed
- Drink and/or drug driving
- Seatbelts
- Peer Pressure
- Mobile phones
It has been staged at the Millfield Theatre since 2008 and is delivered to Year 12 students in Enfield 's secondary schools.
Below are comments from students who saw last year's production:
''It's made me think about the times I could have had something happen to me. I'm not going to put myself in a vulnerable position again''
''This was heartbreaking. I will never drive without a seatbelt. Thank you''
''I will tell whoever is driving too fast to slow down. I will drive safe and try to stay alive. Thank you for everything you showed us today''
SDSA would not be possible without the support of people who have been involved in serious road crashes either as a victim themselves or where a family member was affected. We are always looking for speakers to help us drive these important road safety messages home to this vulnerable audience.
Safe Drive Stay Alive - Enfield 2010 will be held at the Millfield Theatre, Silver Street , Edmonton from 8th to 12th November. If you wish to book your school a place for this year's production or would like to be involved with this year's production or require further information on this project, please contact Alex Kidd - Enfield Road Safety - on 020 8379 8548 or email alex.kidd@enfield.gov.uk
