Housing - Private tenant advice and support

Private tenants advice and support

The Housing Options & Advice Team can provide help and assistance for private tenants whose landlord or agent is harassing them into leaving their accommodation, and those who were evicted illegally. You must be living in Enfield.

If you approach us for help, a Housing Options and Advice Officer will interview you, take down details of your complaint and arrange for an investigation to be carried out.

The Housing Options and Advice Officer will need to see relevant documents relating to the tenancy if they are available. These include:

  • Tenancy agreement
  • Rent book
  • Notices to leave
  • Letters and correspondence

If there is evidence that you were evicted illegally, a Housing Options and Advice Officer will contact the landlord / agent to discuss your claims and negotiate for you to continue staying in the property (if it is appropriate to do so).

If negotiations fail, we may have to refer you to a private solicitor who can apply to the County Court for an injunction forcing the landlord / agent to reinstate you. The Court also has the power to order a landlord / agent to stop harassing or assaulting you.  A solicitor can also pursue a claim for damages on your behalf.

Turnaround time
We aim to see you on the same or next working day that you were evicted illegally.
