Supporting pupils with medical needs in schools

We have a policy for helping pupils with medical needs when they are in school.

This policy:

  • Establishes the legal position on administering medication; and
  • Provides forms that the school can use in consultation with parents if a medical care plan is needed.

All schools would have either adopted this policy or developed their own. Please obtain the school's policy from the school.

The policy aims to:

  • Build on the existing good practice, which ensures that children with medical needs attend school and benefit from doing so.
  • Establish the ways in which schools can effectively and safely meet the needs of these pupils.
  • Build a framework for supporting staff who can assist these pupils.
  • Complement schools' health and safety policies.
If you have a query about how your child's medical needs will be attended to when he is in school, please contact the headteacher.
