Teenage pregnancy rate in Britain
The teenage pregnancy rate is a measure of the number of conceptions for every 1,000 young people under the age of 18. Therefore, the Teenage Pregnancy rate includes all teenage conceptions, whether they end in birth or abortion.
The Social Exclusion Report on Teenage Pregnancy (1999) stated that Britain has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Europe. Every part of the country is affected but the situation is worst in the poorest areas.
The report highlighted two main goals:
- To halve the rate of conceptions among under-18s by 2010.
- To increase the rate of teenage mothers participating in education, employment or training to 50% so as to reduce the risk of long-term social exclusion.
