What is it?

Community Alarm is a 24 hour emergency monitoring system that can help older and vulnerable people to remain living independently and safely in their own homes. It can be used for people who have a medical condition and can offer security and peace of mind.

Who can get Community Alarm?

The service is available to a range of different people, including those with a physical or learning disability, sight or hearing loss, mental health needs, illness, those at risk of falling, or people suffering from domestic violence or abuse.

How does it work?

A pendant is worn either around the neck or as a wrist band and you can call for help simply by pressing a button. This sends an alarm automatically to the control centre where staff can arrange for you to get the help you need as soon as possible.

To have an emergency alarm you will need to have a telephone landline and a nearby electrical socket. The unit has a built-in microphone and a powerful loud speaker so that you can be heard from a distance. Once you have pressed your emergency button, an alert is sent to our control room. Our staff will know who you are and your address. They will talk to you through the unit and ask you what you want us to do to help. For example, you may want us to contact your doctor, family or send one of our mobile Community Alarm officers.

There are two different types of service available:

  • Monitoring only: we will alert your carer, family or friends. You will need to give us the contact details of three people who can come to your home quite quickly.
  • Monitoring and response: a Community Alarm officer will come out to you in an emergency situation regardless of what time of day or night the alarm call was raised.

How much does it cost?

All Community Alarm customers will need to pay a weekly charge. This will differ depending on what service you need.

Can I get help with the cost?

It's quite possible. We will help you fill out a financial assessment form to see if you qualify for financial help.

What is a financial assessment?
