Exclusion from School

When a pupil is excluded from school it can be difficult for parents to know where to get information and advice about the exclusion process.

The Headteacher of a school maintained by a Local Education Authority can take a decision to exclude a pupil, including pupils above or below compulsory school age, for a fixed period of days or permanently.

The Headteacher may take this action:

    • in response to serious breaches of a school’s discipline policy. All schools have a written policy that sets out how pupils are expected to behave

    • where allowing the child to remain in school would seriously harm the education and welfare of the child or others in school

When a school decides to exclude a child, they will inform the child’s parent/carer and explain the reasons for the exclusion. The Local Education Authority has produced the following leaflets that provide further information about exclusions
