How Enfield Council works
Enfield Council has 63 councillors with 3 from each of our 21 wards.
Our decision making process is designed to provide:
• Visible and accountable decision makers
• Quicker decisions
• More openness, transparency and accountability
• Greater community involvement
• Better services
• Better Partnership working
• An increased role for ward councillors
Since May 2002, Enfield has operated a Cabinet and Leader model of decision making. We were one of the first councils to modernise our decision making process. The Cabinet is single party and meets every 3/4 weeks to take executive decisions. There is also delegation to individual Cabinet members to agree matters within their own portfolio areas.
We also have a strong and independent scrutiny function, consisting of an Overview and Scrutiny Committee and six Scrutiny panels. Their role is to question and challenge executive decisions, contribute to Council policy and suggest ways in which Council and partner services can be improved.
The Council is committed to working with the local community to improve services. We have introduced Area Forums and Community Housing Partnerships to give local people the chance to influence the decisions that the Council makes on their behalf. We also publish a Forward Plan to give advance notice of the key decisions the Council will be taking and a twice weekly decision list setting out the decisions that have been taken.
