Access to Council Information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000

Introduction

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives everyone increased rights to access information held by public bodies such as Enfield Council.

We want to conduct our business in an open and honest fashion, and we welcome the opportunity to improve the ways we inform you, the public, about what we do.

The Freedom of Information Act allows public access to all types of recorded information, subject to certain exemptions and exceptions. This right came into effect on 1st January 2005.

Anyone making a request for information has two related rights:

    • the right to be told whether the Council holds the information

    • the right to receive the information they have requested, if it is not covered by the exemptions that the Council has to take into account.

You do not have to say (or even know) that you are making the request under the Freedom of Information Act for its rules to apply. When the Council receives your request it must provide the information you have requested (subject to exemptions) but not necessarily the document that contains the information.

In general, the council has to respond within 20 working days. The request for information must be in writing; this includes e-mails and faxes as well as letters. This is a government legal requirement, not one which this council has imposed. We provide a form on which you can make your request if you wish.

Enfield Council already makes a great deal of information available. You may find the information you require in our Publication Scheme. This is a list of all the information we currently publish, and it tells you how you can obtain the information, and whether or not there is a charge. Additionally, a lot of information about the Council is available in other parts of this website.
