Looked After Children

Living Away From Home

If you cannot live with your family and have to spend time living away from home, you may find yourself in a foster home, children’s home or you might be placed for adoption. You will also have your own social worker who will visit you in your new home and keep in touch with your parents. They will talk with you and listen to what you have to say.

While you are looked after you will receive help with your education. You might have missed a lot of school and want to catch up. If possible, you will remain at your own school so that you can stay with friends and teachers you know. Sometimes it is necessary to change schools. Your new carers will help you with the new journey to school. They will also keep in close contact with the school and attend open evenings, sometimes with your parents. They will want to help you with your homework and give you support if you are having any difficulties. You will have a quiet place to work and should be able to use a computer to help you with your schoolwork.
