Fostering in Enfield
What is fostering?
Fostering involves caring for children in your home while their parents are unable to look after them. This could be due to family illness, a breakdown in family relationships, abuse or neglect, or simply the need for teenagers and parents to live apart for a while.
Above all, it gives children in the Local Authority’s care the opportunity to continue to live and develop within a family environment.
But it won’t all be down to you – there’s lots of help and support at hand. As a foster carer you will be part of a team that is dedicated to making sure every foster child is given the best possible chances in life.
It’s important to remember that fostering is different to adoption, because there is no permanent legal change of parents. So would-be foster carers need to recognise that saying goodbye is part of helping children move on to a bright future. It can be a sad and emotional time, but goodbyes are by no means final, as many children and young people keep in touch with their foster carers long into the future.
Why foster?
This is your chance to make a valuable difference to the children and young people you look after, helping them through some of the most difficult times in their lives, and giving them a positive view of the future. But it’s not just their lives you’ll be changing, it will also have a profound effect on you too.
In fact, many of our foster carers have been helping children and young people for many years. Some even have children of their own, and find fostering enjoyable and highly rewarding.
