Translation and Interpreting ServicesEnfield Council believes that all members of the community have the right to fair access to information and services provided by the Council.
For this reason we provide translation, interpretation and communication services for people who:
- do not speak and/or read English
- are blind or have a visual impairment
- are deaf or have a hearing impairment
- Interpretation, including sign language
- Language translations
- Braille, Large Print and audiotape (English and other languages)
Our services are professional, confidential and sensitive to the needs of the individual. Our experienced interpreters and translators reflect the cultural diversity of our residents.
All services can access telephone interpreting, face to face interpreting and translation services. However, interpreting and translation services can be very expensive so each service is responsible for deciding what support is required and arranging relevant services.
How can I ask for an interpreter to help me?If you visit a council office or have an appointment to see a council officer, you can ask for an interpreter. We will arrange for an interpreter to interpret for you, either in person or over the phone. If an interpreter is not available we will arrange another appointment for you with an interpreter. You will not have to pay for the interpreter.
Where you do not have an appointment we may use one of our bilingual staff to find out what you need and arrange an appointment where a professional interpreter can be available. Bilingual staff and those that can use sign language are available in a number of our offices.
Our telephone customer service centre uses a service that offers interpreting over the phone.
Adult family members or friends can interpret for you if you prefer but children should not be used as interpreters.
How can I ask for a translation? You can ask a council officer who is dealing with your enquiry for a translation of council letters or other council documents. Council headed paper and most leaflets have a language panel on the back cover. You can ask for a translation of that particular document by completing your details on the form given and returning to the freepost address shown. You do not have to pay for translations.
If the document is very large, we may arrange for an interpreter to talk you through the information rather than arrange for a full translation. If you want a web page translated, please use the ’Translation’ link at the bottom of each web page where you will be taken to a specialist translation website.
