Civil Partnerships

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force on 5th December 2005. This enables same-sex couples to obtain legal recognition of their relationships. The Register Office provides venues licensed to hold Civil Partnership ceremonies.

Couples who form a Civil Partnership will have a new legal status, that of ‘civil partner.’ In order to form a Civil Partnership you must first give notice.

Ceremonies take place at the Admiral’s Suite at the Register Office or at one of our venues around the Borough. We offer different levels of ceremony to cater for all needs and budgets. Ceremonies may be booked up to 2 years in advance and it is a legal requirement that you give notice prior to forming your Civil Partnership (not more than 12 months in advance.)

Eligibility
Couples must be of the same sex to enter into a Civil Partnership and over 18 years. Foreign nationals must be free from immigration control or have relevant Home Office certificate/visa.
