Housing – social housing policy

Housing Strategy

The needs, resources, options and priorities for housing in the borough

The Housing Strategy sets out how Enfield will utilise its existing housing stock, and how it will approach the development of new housing. The strategy currently balances the needs of vulnerable people and homeless or overcrowded families with the need to produce sustainable communities, by attracting people to the more deprived areas of the borough.

Enfield’s Housing Strategy is important to you because it sets out our housing priorities and a clear action plan to the year 2010. We aim to deal with the things you consider important.

Key improvements include:
• All temporary accommodation to be made fit and decent
• More accessible housing for people with physical disabilities.
• More CCTV cameras
• Energy efficiency in our homes, which will save money for both you and us.

The Council Housing Business Plan sets out how and when we will invest tenants’ and leaseholders’ money in council housing.

We completed out last Council Housing Business Plan in 2003, and the Government Office for London said that it was ‘fit for purpose’ in early 2004. We are now in the process of reviewing and updating our plan for the coming five years. The new version for 2007 – 2012 should be approved by council in June 2007.

Our previous business plan highlighted the priorities we had as a landlord

• To deal with housing shortages locally using a range of suitable methods.
• To continue to work on improvement plans from previous Best Value
• To meet the decent homes standard for all council housing by 2010.
• To decide on the best option for managing our council housing, by 2005.

Once completed, our new plan will:

    • Set out our progress since 2003
    • Describe our main plans and priorities for services
    • Set out the main tasks we have to do, and the timescales by which we need to do them.

It is crucial that the Council has a good knowledge of its local area. The Ethnic Diversity Research Report makes an important contribution to the Council’s understanding of the communities it serves.

Enfield Council’s knowledge of its community is critical to establishing clear and challenging ambitions for Enfield and all its residents. The Enfield Ethnic Diversity Research Report provides a broad range information about both the majority ethnic community, and individual minority ethnic communities.
