Libraries provide a range of services to meet the library needs of disabled people. These include large print, talking books, Braille resources, accessible computers and a home library delivery service. Access Your Library Every library building must meet the standards for access laid down by the Disability Discrimination Act.
You can borrow or ask at any library for books in large print and recorded books. People with a visual impairment can make use of a free postal taped book service; see the Home Library Service below. Print magnifying machines and specialist software for people with sight impairment can be found at several libraries as well as children’s books in Braille. The Cunneen Collection at Ordnance Road Library has books and signed videos about deafness and deaf issues for adults and children. DVDs are available at most libraries and most DVDs include subtitles which can be read by choosing from the options when watching a DVD. Induction loops can be accessed at Edmonton Green, Central, Ordnance Road, Palmers Green, Enfield Highway, Ponders End and Southgate Circus Libraries. People with disabilities are entitled to reduced library fines and charges. Please ask your local library. Home Library Service Anyone who has difficulty getting to a library or who would like taped books posted to them can apply to the Home Library Service.
