Recycling - General Information

A council may provide local citizens and businesses with general information about waste, recycling, greener alternatives, how to reduce waste and provide access and information about other organisations who may provide associated services (reducing junk mail, furniture reselling etc.)

Officers are available to discuss recycling and waste prevention issues between the hours of 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday.

Home composting
The Council offers discounted home compost bins for use in residents' gardens to recycle kitchen fruit and vegetable scraps and garden waste into compost. The bins are supplied by the Council's partner organisation, the Waste & Resources Action Programme. They are available in three sizes together with an instruction booklet about how to compost:

220 litre bins - £17 (Compost Converter – Oval black plastic bin with lid and hatch)
330 litre bins - £20 (Compost Converter – Oval black plastic bin with lid and hatch)
250 litre bins - £40 (Komp – square green plastic bin with hinged lid)

Kitchen caddies are also available for only £4 when you buy a bin. To see illustrations of bins, visit http://www.recyclenow.com/compost

To order a bin call 0845 077 0757 or go online to http://www.recyclenow.com/compost

Delivery is within 28 working days of order - if the resident is not at home, bins are left as near as possible to the front door and a delivery note put through the letterbox.

Junk mail
The Council's 'Stop Junk Mail' campaign encourages residents to prevent unwanted mail by taking one or more of five actions. Link to stop junk mail attachment under more info

Furniture reuse
If you have unwanted furniture in good condition please contact the Council (020 8379 1000) as it can currently be collected for reuse.

Freecycle
If you would like to give any unwanted items a new home register with the exchange site Freecycle. Whether it’s a chair, gardening tools, musical instruments or a bicycle, you can post your item on the Freecycle website and find a local person to take it off your hands. Or perhaps you want to acquire something for yourself?

Washable Nappies
Using washable or 'real' nappies instead of disposables saves nearly half a tonne of rubbish and £300+ by the time a baby is potty-trained.

Modern shaped washable nappies are a far cry from the old terry towelling and pins versions. They come in a variety of styles and fabrics, fastening easily with poppers, Velcro or plastic grips. Nappy sales agents can show you a range, and nappy hire services enable you to try before you buy.

Just machine wash at 60 degrees or lower depending on how soiled the nappies are - there's no need to soak, boil or pre-wash. The cost can be as low as £1 a week for detergent and electricity. Alternatively a nappy laundry service will collect used nappies and deliver a fresh supply each week - the cost breaks even with buying disposables, and saves waste.

To find out more about real nappies, including contact details for nappy agents, retailers and hire services, call the national Real Nappy Helpline on 0845 850 0606, or visit: www.realnappycampaign.com

Waste information
Raising awareness of all Waste Services related information within the community is vital. We promote our services, events and updated information through many forms of media, such as, leaflets/posters, regular press releases and advertising in local papers, public events, and the Council web site.

We are part of a joint waste strategy across North London and work closely with our partners to inform residents across North London about the work and proposals of the joint waste strategy. Further details can be found on the North London Waste Authority website.

Waste education
We work very closely with schools, colleges and resident groups to offer advise and education on waste minimisation, reduction and recycling. Officers are available to discuss these issues upon request.
