Civil emergencies - major accident hazards

Major Emergencies and Disasters

The emergency planning service ensures the council’s preparedness to respond effectively to an emergency incident.
Emergency incidents and disasters can happen at any time, from fires, flooding and severe weather to explosions, aircraft crashes and infectious disease outbreaks. In recent years Enfield has been affected by flooding, foot and mouth disease, fires and the London Bombings.
Emergencies endanger lives, property and the environment. It may result in the loss of basic services requiring immediate action such as evacuation of homes, schools and businesses.
Emergency planning is the general term for the work that the government, the emergency services, the health services and the Council all do in preparing plans and procedures for dealing with any emergency that might affect large numbers of people.
Enfield Council Emergency Planning Team work to ensure that the Council can effectively respond to emergencies affecting the borough through carrying out the following activities:
• Emergency Planning
• Risk Assessment
• Information sharing and cooperation
• Warning and informing the Public
• Business Continuity Planning and Promotion

Enfield Council works in partnership with organisations locally, regionally and nationally. Enfield is a member of the North Central Local Resilience Forum which brings together Category One responders which include the emergency services and government agencies as well as surrounding boroughs. This forum ensures all the organisations work together in planning for emergencies.

What are the types of emergencies we plan for?

• Flooding and other severe weather
• Flu pandemic
• Industrial incidents
