Safety - health and safety at work - investigation

The local authority is responsible for dealing with problems relating to work related accidents.

Service Requests:

The Service aims to respond to all new requests for service enquiries within 24
hours of receipt. This is monitored as part of the Environmental Health &
Regulations Division Improvement Plan for 2005-2008. When a Service Request is made the customer will be advised of which team will be dealing with the request and the worksheet reference number will be given, this enables the customer to follow up his/her enquiry. All customers will be notified in writing of the outcome of their Service Request.

We aim to provide an efficient and effective standard of service as it is important that customers receive the best possible service based on the resources available. We will give advice and support to all our customers and act upon information received.

Accident Notifcations:

The Environmental Protection & Safety Team receive several hundred reports throughout the year in relation to injuries, dangerous occurrences or occupational diseases resulting from working activities. This service recognises it has a legal duty under Section 18 Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 to make adequate arrangements for health and safety enforcement, including investigation of workplace accidents
This Service is committed to processing notifiable accidents that have been reported, these reports come from a number of different sources including: -

• Telephone – most likely this will be of a serious nature or a fatality
• Caerphilly Incident Contact Centre via Internet access
• While visiting a premises
• Personal visit to the Civic Centre by employer or employee
• Letters (e.g. From solicitors/ injured persons)
• Fax or email

Not all RIDDOR notified incidents would be investigated. We devote most of our available resources to the more serious accidents such as major accidents and fatalities.
