A register of publicly maintained (adopted) roads can be inspected at the Civic Centre (Environment Direct) between 8.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday. In addition, an extract from the Council’s GIS map records can be provided by writing to Traffic and Transportation Services and enclosing a cheque for the set fee (currently £20). A new road will be considered for adoption subject it meeting the Council’s design standards and the Developer entering into a suitable legal agreement with the Council (s38 Highways Act 1980). Further information on the Adoption Process can be found at [insert link] There are several roads in the Borough that the Council does not maintain, often because they do not meet the Council’s minimum standards of design and/or construction. In certain circumstances, the Council can adopt such roads if they are first made up to the required standard. The cost of bring the road up to the required standard would be determined by the Council and apportioned to the properties abutting the road. Any disputes about the apportionment of costs will normally need to be determined by the Magistrates Court. Eligibility
