Schools - psychological, psychiatric or social work services

Enfield CAMHS & EPS (formerly known as Child Guidance Service)

The Educational Psychology Service supports parents and teachers with the educational needs of children who have difficulties affecting their ability to learn. The Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service offers assessment and therapy to children, young people and families where there is concern about a child’s emotional or behavioural difficulties either at home or at school.

Multi-disciplinary teams funded by the Local Authority and Barnet, Enfield & Haringey Mental Health Trust provide free specialist services for children (0-18 years old) and their families, enabling them to have access to the most appropriate form of psychological help. Staff are highly qualified professionals, trained in psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy, family therapy, social work or nursing.
Young people and parents are welcome to contact the services directly for information but referrals are generally made through professional agencies.

The Educational Psychology Service supports parents and teachers in developing their understanding of, and response to, the educational needs of their children. Referrals to the Educational Psychologist are made by the school with parental agreement.
The EPS also provides advice for the Local Authority if a child has particularly complex needs and may need additional support.

The EPS works closely with the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS).
CAMHS offers assessment and therapy to children and young people who have emotional or behavioural difficulties. Referrals to CAMHS are usually made with parental consent through the school, GP, Social Worker or other professional. First appointments are offered as far as possible within 13 weeks. There are 2 main CAMHS Teams, one based at Charles Babbage House (the Orton Grove Team) and one at 8 Dryden Road ( Dryden Road Team).

The Service for Adolescents & Families (SAFE) is part of CAMHS and provides a rapid response (generally within 2 weeks) to adolescents in crisis or self-harming. Referrals come from education, health and social work professionals. Young people over 16 and up to their 18th birthday may refer themselves.

CAMHS also includes the Service for Children and Adolescents with neuro-developmental disorders (SCAN). It is based at Cedar House, St. Michael’s site. This service specialises in seeing children and young people with severe learning disabilities and neuro-developmental disorders where the degree of impairment is significant and there are also mental health problems. Referrals come from the CAMHS Teams, Cheviots and Paediatricians.
