Housing – Alterations by Tenants | |
Alterations by TenantsUnder your tenancy agreement you have the right to carry out improvements to your Council property, so long as you have permission from the Council to do so. Some examples of improvements you may be able to do with permission include:
Before starting work, you must first apply for permission form your landlord. Permission will not be unreasonably refused – you will only be refused permission if the work would cause the landlord expense, make it difficult to let the property in future or give rise to complaints from other residents. You are also responsible for getting any planning and building regulations approval that is required, and any costs that are involved with this. If you have carried out improvements since 1 April 1994 with the Council’s permission, you may be able to get compensation at the end of your tenancy. Eligibility
