The Learning Mentor Strand of Excellence in Cities has an overview of mentoring provision and provides support to schools and organisations employing Learning Mentors. Regular networking opportunities are provided to encourage practitioners to share good practice and develop expertise. To further enhance the skills of Learning Mentors, provision is also made for continued professional development with access to local and national training. The role of the Learning Mentor (LM) is an evolving one. As school-based professionals, they support a diverse group of students experiencing difficulty in some area of their school life. Their focus is on how to develop the student as a learner, improving engagement in learning, particularly for underachieving groups. LMs work in various ways to help children and young people overcome barriers to learning both within and outside of school, including work with individuals and small groupwork. They work in conjunction with school staff, families and external agencies to provide support as required. Learning Mentors need to have a number of skills and experience including being able to: • Form positive relationships with a wide range of children/young people and their families/carers.
