Council tax - benefit - backdated claim

Backdating of Benefit Claims

A claimant may be eligible for their claim to be backdated if there is a valid reason why they were unable to apply for their council tax benefit earlier.

If you have claimed Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit, but would have claimed sooner if you could have, you can ask us to backdate your claim for Benefit. This means that we could treat your claim as if we received your claim form on an earlier date.

To ask for backdating, you can complete Part 18, headed “Backdating” on the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claim form. You can also make a request in writing stating your reasons for failing to claim Benefit sooner.
