To provide advice and information about the location and status of public rights of way within the Borough. The London Borough of Enfield currently has a total of 324 public rights of way recorded on its Definitive Map, totalling approximately 64km. The rights of way network includes both urban and rural paths and provides a valuable resource for recreation and sustainable transport. Traffic and Transportation works to assert the rights of the public to use the rights of way network and ensure that those rights are exercised responsibly. Landowners and other groups who have powers affecting rights of way are also monitored to ensure they are also acting responsibly. The Definitive Map, dated 30 June 2001 is held and maintained by Traffic and Transportation, based in B Block North, 1st Floor Civic Centre. It can be inspected at the Civic Centre, 1st Floor – Environment Direct, Silver Street, Enfield, Middlesex, EN1 3XA from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8.30am and 5.00pm. Traffic and Transportation also deals with legal changes to the Definitive Map, maintenance and enforcement issues. The Council’s network is prone to change to reflect and legally record new routes added, diverted and occasionally paths being closed. Anyone can apply to the Council to make a modification order to change the Definitive Map for it to be corrected if they believe that there is an error or omission. Applications can be requested by phone - 0208 379 3565, e-mail or by post. Traffic and Transportation are also required to maintain a register of such applications. This can be viewed by visiting the Enfield Council website, under Transport and Streets – Walking in Enfield. The site is however, currently under construction. Alternatively, the hard copy can be inspected at the Civic Centre, 1st Floor – Environment Direct, Silver Street, Enfield, Middlesex, EN1 3XA from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8.30am and 5.00pm.
