Land and property - dangerous structures - public safety

The local authority has a responsibility to deal with privately owned buildings/structures which have become dangerous due to old age, deterioration or settlement, or damage by more dramatic causes.

Our aim is to attend a reported dangerous structure within 1 hour - 24 hours a day - 365 days per year, in the interests of the health and safety of people.
If the surveyor considers that the structure is dangerous we are required to do the minimum necessary to protect the public.
If possible this means liaising with the owner to remove the danger.
If the danger is imminent and the owner cannot be contacted, the surveyor may call a contractor to make safe. This could just mean putting up signs and taping off, or it could mean demolition.
It should be noted that all costs incurred by the council are chargeable against the owner.
If the danger is not imminent the surveyor will serve a Notice on the owner to give them time to take remedial action.
