Under Fives Home School Liaison Service

Support for children who do not have English as their first language. This may be provided by bi-lingual classroom assistants and resources or interpreting and translation in nursery and primary schools.

The Under Fives Home School Liaison Service is a team of a Co-ordinator, 5 teachers and 7 Bilingual Home School Liaison Officers. The team speak 11 languages. The Service aims to support and enhance the quality of pre-school educational opportunities for children through the development of a close partnership between pupils, parents, communities and schools.

The Service is currently working in 21 schools. It provides a pre-school programme for children in the year before they start school.

The Home School Liaison Team
Works with pre-school children who have limited access to nursery education in the year before they start school
Makes home visits and works with the children and their families taking in high quality books, toys and games to support the children’s learning through play
Provides information for parents and carers about the school system and the facilities available in Enfield for example, Pre-schools, Parent/Carer and Toddler Groups, Libraries, Health Services and English Classes for speakers of other languages.
Runs Playsessions and Toy Libraries in the Spring and Summer Terms for all the children on the waiting list and their families. This provides an opportunity for them to become familiar with the school and the staff and facilitates a smooth transition between home and school

The Service also works with some families who are not within the area of the 21 schools through referrals from health visitors and other professionals.

The Service accepts referrals by telephone from professionals and also directly from parents and is available to discuss questions about the appropriateness of the referral.
