Highways Verge Grass Maintenance

This service relates to the cutting of grass on Highways public land within the local authority area.

Standard Verges:
Verges are cut on a 3-week cycle between March and October. (10 Summer Cuts). There is also an additional winter cut between December and March.

The grass is cut to a height of 50mm, and cuttings are left on the grass areas.

Country Side Verges and banks and country side footpaths
Two cuts are made during the summer in April/ May and in August/ September. Clippings are left on the ground.

Conservation Grass
Cut once per annum or as local site conditions require for the benefit of wildlife.

General:
Litter picking is completed before each cut to prevent the cutting up and spread of rubbish. Cuttings are left on the ground but are swept or blown off paved areas. Grass is trimmed but the council does not complete a half-mooning operation.

Verges and areas of grass on the public highway maintainable at the public expense.
