Refuse - litter bins | |
|
The council provide and maintain bins to try and prevent the depositing of litter in public places and arrange for the bins to be emptied on a regular basis. Litter in a public place is unsightly, dangerous to animals, and an offence. The average fine for littering is around £95, but can be up to £2,500. The prosecution of offenders and issuing of fixed penalty notices is performed by the Environmental Crime Unit. Our street cleansing service operates 24 hours a day Monday to Friday and 6am to 8pm Saturday and Sunday (weekend working is only in town centres etc). Over 1,500 litter bins are provided across the borough and are situated on the public highway, parks and Council housing estates. All bins are emptied as often as required and this is at least on a weekly basis. Every year the Council invests in new bins and in accordance with it’s strategy aims to place bins on school routes, near shops, by bus stops and benches. All new bins are provided with ‘stubber’ ashtray facilities for smokers. Residents can request new litter bins by calling the Customer Services Centre. Eligibility
